In 1934, architect Gerrit Rietveld designed a unique furniture series made from pinewood derived from packaging material used in furniture transport. In doing so, Rietveld wanted to make simple and practical designs affordable for the masses.

89 years after the first design, Rietveld Originals and HAY are joining forces for the global production, marketing and distribution of the Crate series.

'The Crate Chair is a great example of a piece of furniture designed by an architect who was looking for harmony between architecture and interior design,' says Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY. 'It's hard to think of a design closer to our core design values. It was Rietveld' s mission to create a super cool, affordable, open-source furniture line for everyone - with an incredibly democratic approach to design.’

Rietveld Originals managing director Titus Darley: 'The crate furniture is very cleverly designed and has beautiful proportions. The construction is visible, transparent and honest, with none of the material used going to waste. Rietveld' s conscious use of material forms and his aim to design furniture for the masses is also relevant to the current generation. We can make an entire furniture series with spruce in two uniform widths. With the relaunch of the Crate series we, together with HAY, can make Rietveld' s  dream come true almost nine years after the design.’

Rietveld Originals makes the series from solid spruce wood which, due to its treatment makes it suitable for indoor and outdoor use. The crate furniture is delivered flat-pack and can be easily assembled. The colour of the furniture is based on a palette that Rietveld used regularly in his houses. The crate series is available in black, white, iron red, a grey shade called London Fog, and of course in lacquered natural pine.
