Throughout his career, Rietveld designed several jointless chairs that were made from a single piece of material. To him, this was the ultimate construction puzzle. The Zig-Zag is a variation on this theme: made of a single plate of wood, it was not jointless but nonetheless had a very daring construction. The Zig-Zag is considered to be the purest example of the synthesis between form, function, and construction in Rietveld’s oeuvre.
The classic model of the Zig-Zag chair was only developed after a number of experiments with different materials. Attempts to make the design out of fiber, steel piping, multiplex, and steel plate failed. In the end, the version made of four wooden Bruynzeel cupboard shelves proved to be the easiest and strongest. Rietveld developed several variations on the Zig-Zag chair in the 1930s and 1940s. Almost all versions were taken into production by Metz & Co. The current version by Cassina is beautifully executed, without screws and with visible dovetail joints.
