Utrecht armchair XL (Cassina)

Gerrit Rietveld | 1936

The Utrecht chair is one of the few upholstered chairs by Rietveld that has actually been put into production. The chair, with armrests that merge into front legs, was introduced in 1936 by Metz & Co. published in Amsterdam. The seat and backrest form an angle, the tilted connection of which forms the back leg. The first version was covered with dark brown tarpaulin (canvas) and finished with a clearly visible feston stitch. After the war, Metz & Co took the chair back into production, this time in woolen fabrics (felt) with the distinctive white stitching again.

In 1988, one hundred years after Rietveld's birth, Cassina put the Utrecht chair back into production. The Cassina Utrecht chair is available in a large number of upholstery options.
